Summary: | Agricultural investment insurance, generically known as agricultural insurance, is the technical foundation for Comprehensive Risk anagement (Gestión Integral del Riesgo, abbreviated as: GIR) and is considered by specialists as an efficient tool for planning the rural sector, with a territorial approach. In Colombia, many attempts have been made to establish, develop and apply it. However, due to multiple factors; among which the high moral hazard associated with corruption stands out, as well as to the low insurance culture; its implementation has had multiple drawbacks. In the last five years, this topic has gained significant relevance as an efficient tool for managing agricultural risks from environmental phenomena such as climate change and variability. This academic document systematically collects the author experiences compiled since 1993 developing technical processes for the management of agricultural risks of hydroclimatic origin, in insurance and reinsurance companies at a national and international level. The document is divided into five chapters: the first deals with the general aspects ofagricultural insurance; the second describes the coverage of agricultural insurance in Colombia; in the third, the eight crops insurable and prioritized by the regulations in Colombia are described at a general level; the fourth presents the calculation of risk premiums and describes the processes of appraisal, subscription and adjustment of claims; and the fifth presents the perspectives of agricultural insurance in Colombia. Finally, the conclusions, bibliography and annexes are indicated. The main strength of this book is that it contributes, hitherto unpublished, for the service of the academic community (researchers, students, educational and training institutions), as well as Colombian agriculture (producers, associations, unions, institutions public and private).
