| description | The changes associated with the excessive expansion of urban settlements, the technical and scientific development, the changes of demographic indexes, and the use of new energetic sources and new materials have transformed the contemporary world into a huge turbulence characterized by highest rates of environmental damage: deforestation, desertification, erosion, droughts, floods and industrial and domestic pollution. The global environmental problems and their causes must not be excluded in the analysis of the current development model, which is dependent and peripheral and a factor of instability and conflict between the human society and the environment.
The environment is evidently sensitive when the human actions are risking the quality, constancy, and durability of the ecosystem and the human race wellbeing, where the health is one of its vital aspects. The human being has been in the middle of this net, merging his biologic and social complexity as creator, culture, and development promoter. Environment and human health could be understood as a convergence: environmental health. Its reciprocity is established by physical, chemical, biological, social, psychosocial, and environmental factors. |

Los cambios asociados a la desmedida expansión de los asentamientos urbanos, al desarrollo científico técnico, a la alteración de los índices demográficos, al aprovechamiento de nuevas fuentes energéticas y de nuevos materiales, han convertido al mundo contemporáneo en una gran turbulencia caracterizada por elevadas tasas de deterioro medioambiental: deforestación, desertización, erosión, polución, sequías, inundaciones, contaminación industrial y doméstica. No se pueden desconocer los problemas ambientales globales ni sus causas, pues explican la prevalencia del actual modelo de desarrollo: dependiente y periférico, inductor de inestabilidad y de conflicto entre la sociedad y su medio ambiente. La integralidad del medio ambiente se evidencia más sensiblemente cuando se considera el impacto que las acciones humanas han ejercido sobre los factores ambientales, arriesgando la calidad, la constancia y la perdurabilidad de un ecosistema y la calidad de vida de la especie humana, donde la salud es uno de sus componentes imprescindibles. En esta intrincada red de relaciones, el ser humano se ha ubicado en el centro, incorporando su complejidad biológica y social como creador, promotor de cultura y de desarrollo en su más amplia acepción. La salud ambiental resulta de la conjunción del ambiente con la salud humana, principio esencial basado en la calidad de vida, cuya reciprocidad es establecida por factores físicos, químicos, biológicos, sociales y psicosociales variantes y dependientes.
