description The main objective of this article is to provide an explanation to the facing that intercultural education has in Guatemala. Its relevance is that it constitutes a questioning of educational practices and policies that have been normalized without the participation or intervention of historians. The method used is critical analysis, the methodology being a criticism that aims at establishing a balance between globalizing aspirations and the substitution of traditional education for the one that incorporates teaching in indigenous languages. The strategies studied have been those of a critical analysis, compiling evidence and testimonies of educational practices. Finally, it has been concluded that the understanding of intercultural education obeys an institutional vision that relates it to the solution of the educational problems of the indigenous population through the use of native languages and the rescue of cultural features of the original communities.

Objetivo: Este artículo plantea un análisis crítico del desarrollo de los procesos de educación intercultural en Guatemala confrontando los supuestos operativos de la misma a nivel internacional y la praxis sometida a las condiciones locales.  Método: Utilizando un enfoque crítico y comparativo, se busca comprender el porqué, las prácticas educativas en cuestión se orientan circularmente, enfocándose en la conservación de las culturas originarias en lugar de propiciar las capacidades para interactuar con otras.  Estrategias: Un análisis de los discursos oficiales y textos analíticos, ha permitido establecer que, el carácter presentado por la educación intercultural guatemalteca obedece, en la actualidad, a la sustitución de la educación tradicional, asimilacionista y absorbente, la que se plantea modificada con la vigencia de los Acuerdos de Paz firmados en 1996.  Originalidad: El artículo aporta un balance crítico sobre los resultados del enfoque oficial sobre la educación intercultural, un aspecto inédito en Guatemala.  Se puede concluir que la forma en que se desarrolla esta modalidad educativa obedece a un enfoque institucional que la asume como la solución de los problemas educativos de los pueblos indígenas a partir del incentivo al uso de las lenguas nativas en los espacios escolares y el rescate de rasgos culturales identitarios. O objetivo central deste artigo é fornecer uma explicação para a orientação da educação intercultural na Guatemala. A relevância disto reside no fato de que constitui um questionamento às práticas e políticas educativas que foram normalizadas sem participação nem intervenção de historiadores. O método utilizado é a análise crítica, sendo a metodologia uma crítica que se orienta para estabelecer um balanço entre as aspirações globalizantes e a substituição da educação tradicional por uma que incorpora o ensino em línguas indígenas. As estratégias contempladas foram próprias de uma análise crítica, compilando evidências e testemunhos de práticas educativas. Finalmente, chegou-se à conclusão de que a compreensão da educação intercultural obedece a uma visão institucional que a relaciona com a solução dos problemas educacionais da população indígena a partir do uso das línguas nativas e do resgate das características culturais dos povos originários.
