Nació en Moscú, Rusia, el 5 de diciembre de 1866, en el seno de una familia pudiente y culta. Su padre tocaba la cítara y su madre, el piano. Como ellos se separaron, él fue criado por su tía y su madre, quienes influyeron fuertemente en su formación y gusto por el arte. Se casó dos veces y su segunda esposa, Nina Kandinsky, sería una figura fundamental para que su obra fuese conocida, ya que ella dedicó su vida a resaltar la obra del artista.
