description Growth of lettuce ‘Batavia’ was evaluated at different salt concentrations in water irrigation under hydroponic conditions in the Bogotá plateau comparing the use of two substrates: blonde peat and a mixture between rice husk and blonde peat in 1:1 ratio. The evaluated variables: plant height, plant leaves number, dry weight, fresh weight and leaf area. These variables ere used to state the growth parameters: Leaf area index (LAI), specific leaf area (SLA), net assimilation rate (NAR), growth absolute rate (GAR), growth relative rate (RGR) and crop growth rate (CGR). Difference was observed pronounced in the height of the plant between treatments, being higher the height of plants sowed in peat. The biggest leaf number appeared in the plants established in peat without addition of NaCl, with 35 leaves in average. There was a reduction in foliar area as salt concentrations were increased. It was observed that the reduction of the leaves dry weight of plants established in mixed substrates was 38%, with regard to the treatments established in peat. The salinity affects vegetative and reproductive stages of development and also causes reductions both in the biomass and in the yield of the culture. The best responses for all salt concentrations in the growth parameters, dry weight, and biomass accumulation were reported for plants sowed in blonde peat, due to a more controllable salinity in this substrate.

Se evaluó el crecimiento de lechuga ‘Batavia’ a diferentes concentraciones de sal en el agua de riego en condiciones hidropónicas en la sabana de Bogotá comparando el uso de dos sustratos: turba rubia y mezcla de cascarilla de arroz con turba rubia en proporción 1:1. Se evaluaron las variables: altura de planta, número de hojas por planta, peso seco, peso fresco y área foliar. Con base en estas variables se determinaron los parámetros de crecimiento: índice de área foliar (IAF), área foliar específica (AFE), tasa de asimilación neta (TAN), tasa absoluta de crecimiento (TAC), tasa relativa de crecimiento (TRC) y tasa de crecimiento del cultivo (TCC). Se observó una marcada diferencia en la altura de planta entre tratamientos, siendo mayor la altura de plantas sembradas en turba. El mayor número de hojas se presentó en plantas establecidas en turba sin adición de NaCl, con 35 hojas en promedio. El área foliar disminuyó en función de las concentraciones de sal. Se observó una reducción del peso seco foliar de las plantas establecidas en mezcla del 38%, con respecto a los tratamientos de turba. La salinidad afecta los estados de desarrollo vegetativo y reproductivo y además causa reducciones tanto en la biomasa como en el rendimiento del cultivo. Las mejores respuestas para todas las concentraciones de sales en los diferentes parámetros de crecimiento, peso seco y acumulación de biomasa se observaron en plantas sembradas en turba, debido a que la salinidad es más controlable en este sustrato.
