Franz Overbeck, profesor de Teología en la Universidad de Basilea, amigo de Friedrich Nietzsche, desarrolló una versión muy personal del humanismo, mucho más allá de las ilusiones del humanismo tradicional, orientado en el ideal de la antigüedad. El humanismo de Overbeck es un humanismo crítico y escéptico, lejos de todo humanismo dogmático. Overbeck protege al hombre ante las imposiciones de la antropología cristiana, así como ante las imposiciones de la convicción nietzscheana de un super hombre futuro de la humanidad.
