The social history of the sciences and the sociology of the professions constitute a basis from which to examine it. This article poses two questions as a starting point: What are the relationships and confrontations between the medical profession and its related fields and how have they operated in the historical process of the professionalisation of medicine? How has the ethical discourse been manifested and how has it influenced this process? In order to illustrate the legitimisation of the monopoly of the practice of medicine in Colombia, a corpus of speeches and debates on its professionalization was established, with an emphasis on statements regarding ethics as a defence of the profession. Those discourses were published in the main medical and pharmacy journals of the country, between 1894 and 1914. The corpus shows that the medical arguments in favour of a monopoly on the practice of medicine, in addition to being scientific and economic, are political and ethical. They include argumentation in which are combined reflections on the moral qualities of doctors, as well as their legitimacy in the administration of the truth and the necessity to exert power in the delimitation of the profession. |

En Colombia, la historia de la profesionalización es un problema poco explorado. La historia social de las ciencias y la sociología de las profesiones nos aportan una base para interrogarla. Este artículo parte de dos preguntas: ¿Cuáles son y cómo han operado las relaciones y confrontaciones entre profesiones y oficios médicos y afines, en el proceso histórico de la profesionalización de la medicina? y ¿cómo se ha manifestado e influido en ese proceso el discurso ético? Para ilustrar la legitimación del monopolio del ejercicio de la medicina en Colombia, se estableció un corpus de discursos y debates sobre la profesionalización, con énfasis en enunciados sobre la ética como defensa de la profesión. Esos discursos fueron publicados en las principales revistas de medicina y farmacia del país, entre 1894 y 1914. El corpus muestra que los argumentos médicos en favor de un monopolio del ejercicio de la medicina son, además de científicos y económicos, políticos y éticos. Se inscriben en una argumentación en que se combinan reflexiones sobre las cualidades morales de los médicos, así como su legitimidad en la administración de la verdad y su necesidad de ejercer poder en la delimitación de la profesión. L’histoire de la professionnalisation en Colombie reste un problème peu étudié. Or, l’histoire sociale des sciences et la sociologie des professions nous apportent une base précieuse pour la comprendre. Cet article a pour point de départ un double questionnement : quels sont et comment ont opéré les rapports et les affrontements entre la profession et les métiers médicaux dans la professionnalisation de la médicine? Quel a été la place du discours éthique dans ce processus? Afin d’illustrer la légitimation du monopole de l’exercice de la médicine en Colombie, on établit un corpus de discours et débats sur la professionnalisation, en nous attardant notamment sur les énoncés éthiques en tant que défense de la profession. Ces discours ont été publiés dans les principales revues de médicine et pharmacie du pays entre 1894 et 1914. Ce corpus montre que les arguments médicaux en faveur d’un monopole de l’exercice de la médicine sont non seulement scientifiques et économiques mais aussi politiques et éthiques. Ils s’inscrivent dans une lignée plus générale où se mélangent des réflexions sur les qualités morales des médecins ainsi que sur leur légitimité pour l’administration de la vérité et la nécessité d’exercer le pouvoir afin de délimiter la profession.
