Originality/contribution: The article suggests reading and learning about other historical experiences with the intent of questioning the widespread understanding that African enslaved people weren’t educated.
Method: Based on a comparative method and analysis of sources, the article seeks to understanding the existence of subjects made invisible in academic production: literate and educated enslaved women and men. Through the movement of connections, it is essential to map out the debate around the instruction and education of enslaved people in academic studies of the African diaspora in the Americas.
Strategies/information collection: Does studying other African diaspora experiences help understanding Brazil?
Conclusions: The article conclusion is that the meaning of education and literacy for enslaved people in the Americas allows for a more complex understanding of the Brazilian case, with particular attention given to the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th Century. |

L'objectif de cet article est de déchiffrer le «silence des lettres» et de comprendre le sens de l'éducation et de l'instruction des esclaves et affranchis du Rio de Janeiro impérial. Quelle est la signification de l'éducation des esclaves? À différentes époques et dans différents pays, les chercheurs ont été confrontés au défi d'analyser l'existence de sujets invisibles dans la production universitaire: des hommes et des femmes esclaves alphabétisés et éduqués. A travers le mouvement des connexions, il est fondamental de tirer le débat autour de l'instruction et de l'éducation des esclaves dans les études universitaires de la diaspora africaine dans les Amériques. L'étude d'autres expériences de la diaspora africaine aide-t-elle à comprendre le Brésil? L'article suggère de lire et d'apprendre d'autres expériences historiques dans le but de remettre en question la compréhension largement répandue selon laquelle les esclaves africains n'étaient pas éduqués. La lecture de la signification de l'éducation et de l'alphabétisation pour les esclaves des Amériques permet une compréhension plus complexe du cas brésilien, avec une attention particulière à la ville de Rio de Janeiro au XIXe siècle.
