As well as, about what kind of knowledge to promote or if was necessary to keep the Scholastic method and its emphasis on rhetoric, literature and law, or to promote the study of practical sciences related to knowledge based on experience. |

El establecimiento del Estado republicano marca una época de inflexión que tiene en lo educativo conexiones con los procesos de cambio desarrollados durante los últimos treinta años del siglo XVIII, así como con el carácter de los debates en torno a cómo educar a la gente de la naciente república, que se mantuvieron vivos casi durante todo el siglo XIX. La discusión sobre lo educativo giró básicamente en torno a tres problemas: los planes de estudio, la relación entre la educación superior y la Iglesia, y la controversia entre ciencias tradicionales y ciencias útiles, acerca de qué tipo de conocimiento promover, si mantener el método escolástico y su énfasis en la retórica, en la literatura y en el derecho, o promover el estudio de las ciencias prácticas asociadas alconocimiento basado en la experiencia.
