El artículo es resultado de una investigación sobre la enseñanza de las primeras letras en Chiapas, en las postrimerías de la colonia y durante la revolución de independencia. El trabajo contextualiza y examina el discurso educativo del régimen colonial, y lo compara con esfuerzos similares que tuvieron lugar tanto en España como en otros países de Iberoamérica. A partir de las fuentes consultadas, se concluye que fracasaron los esfuerzos realizados por la corona española en cuanto a la enseñanza de primeras letras dirigida a la población en general.Palabras clave:Enseñanza,Primeras Letras, Chiapas, RégimenColonial, Independencia.
