Its objectives include disseminating technical knowledge, promoting new technologies, and improving farmers' production and quality of life. The relationship between research and agricultural production is evident in the development and sustainability of coffee cultivation in Colombia. Coffee is the country's primary agricultural export. The National Coffee Research Center (Cenicafé, for its acronym in Spanish) has conducted research that has contributed to the development of resistant coffee varieties. Rural extension programs have facilitated the transfer of this and other technologies to coffee growers, resulting in improved productivity, sustainability, and quality of life. The adoption of new technologies by agricultural producers follows a process that includes stages such as knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, and confirmation. Rural extension employs individual, group, and mass methods to disseminate information, enabling farmers to adopt technologies that contribute to the resolution of problems that arise in production processes. Research in the coffee sector, led by Cenicafé, has been crucial. For example, the development of rust-resistant varieties has had a positive impact on profitability and environmental conservation. However, the application of research faces challenges such as limited resources, time, and resistance to change. Extension in Colombian coffee farming encounters comparable challenges but also offers prospects, such as certifying sustainable coffees and exploring tourism and agrotourism. Therefore, it is crucial to reinforce rural extension with the backing of diverse stakeholders and policies. |

La extensión rural desempeña un papel esencial para la conexión entre investigación y producción agropecuaria, y se define como el proceso organizativo en el que las comunidades se reúnen para adquirir conocimientos y tecnologías aplicables en sus fincas. Sus objetivos incluyen difundir conocimientos técnicos, promover nuevas tecnologías y mejorar la producción y calidad de vida de los agricultores. La relación estrecha entre investigación y producción agropecuaria se evidencia en el desarrollo y la sostenibilidad del cultivo de café en Colombia, donde el café es el primer producto de exportación agrícola. La investigación del Centro Nacional de Investigación del Café (Cenicafé) ha contribuido al desarrollo de variedades resistentes, y la extensión rural ha facilitado la transferencia de esta y otras tecnologías a los caficultores, para mejorar la productividad, sostenibilidad y calidad de vida. El proceso de adopción de nuevas tecnologías por los productores agropecuarios pasa por etapas como el conocimiento, la persuasión, decisión, implementación y confirmación. La extensión rural utiliza métodos individuales, grupales y masivos para difundir información, de manera que los agricultores adopten tecnologías que contribuyan a la solución de problemáticas que se presentan en los procesos productivos. La investigación en el sector cafetero, liderada por Cenicafé, ha resultado crucial, un claro ejemplo es el desarrollo de variedades resistentes a la roya que generan impacto positivo en la rentabilidad y la conservación del medio ambiente. Sin embargo, la aplicación de la investigación enfrenta desafíos como recursos limitados, el tiempo y la resistencia al cambio. La extensión en la caficultura colombiana afronta desafíos similares, pero también presenta oportunidades como las certificaciones de cafés sostenibles y la incursión en el agroturismo y el acceso a mercados especializados. Por tal razón es de gran importancia fortalecer la extensión rural con apoyo de diferentes actores y políticas.
