description This article discusses the historical aspects of global wine consumption and the notion of status and social distinction. The analysis is presented through the field of Global History, using bibliographical review and related sources to weave a critical and current narrative on the topic. Wine consumption is intrinsically related to historical-geographical and sociocultural factors, revealing processes intertwined with asymmetrical power relations, class hierarchy, economic and cultural capital, predilections and exclusions. The appreciation of certain lifestyles – such as, in this case, the conspicuous consumption of wine – is a subjective social phenomenon increasingly constructed through advertising and in-person and virtual networks, subject to continuous change. The analysis of the historical trajectory of wine consumption as a symbol of social status represents an interesting opportunity to overcome a conventional and colonialist “wine world” and inserts historians in the current debate for a more sustainable and responsible wine industry with wine workers, the environment of the producing regions and respect for the health of the final consumer.

O presenta artigo disserta acerca dos aspectos históricos do consumo global de vinho e a noção de status e distinção social. A análise apresenta-se através do campo da História Global, utilizando-se de revisão bibliográfica e fontes relacionadas para tecer uma narrativa crítica e atual sobre o tema. O consumo do vinho está intrinsecamente relacionado a fatores histórico-geográficos e socioculturais, revelando processos imbricados por relações assimétricas de poder, hierarquia de classes, capital econômico e cultural, predileções e exclusões. A valorização de determinados lifestyles – como, neste caso, o consumo conspícuo de vinhos – é um fenômeno social subjetivo construído, cada vez mais, através da publicidade e das redes presenciais e virtuais, passível de mudanças contínuas. A análise da trajetória histórica do consumo de vinho como símbolo de status social representa uma interessante oportunidade para a superação de um “mundo do vinho” convencional e colonialista e insere os historiadores no atual debate por uma vitivinicultura mais sustentável e responsável com os trabalhadores vitivinícolas, o meio ambiente das regiões produtoras e o respeito à saúde do consumidor final. Este artículo analiza los aspectos históricos del consumo mundial de vino y la noción de estatus y distinción social. El análisis se presenta a través del campo de la Historia Global, utilizando revisión bibliográfica y fuentes relacionadas para tejer una narrativa crítica y actual sobre el tema. El consumo de vino está intrínsecamente relacionado con factores histórico-geográficos y socioculturales, revelando procesos entrelazados con relaciones de poder asimétricas, jerarquía de clases, capital económico y cultural, predilecciones y exclusiones. La valoración de determinados estilos de vida –como, en este caso, el consumo conspicuo de vino– es un fenómeno social subjetivo cada vez más construido a través de la publicidad y las redes presenciales y virtuales, sujeto a continuos cambios. El análisis de la trayectoria histórica del consumo de vino como símbolo de estatus social representa una interesante oportunidad para superar un “mundo del vino” convencional y colonialista e inserta a los historiadores en el debate actual por una industria vitivinícola más sostenible y responsable con los trabajadores del vino, el medio ambiente. de las regiones productoras y el respeto a la salud del consumidor final.
