El objetivo de este artículo consiste en analizar los sentidos diversos que adoptó el federalismo argentino entre 18301880, en función de la relación de fuerzas cambiantes entre las provincias y el incipiente Estado central. En tal sentido, el vocablo federal podía aludir al proceso de descomposición del orden colonial, caracterizado por laretroversión de la soberanía a las ciudades o expresar un movimiento federal con vocación totalizadora y unificadora. Ambas acepciones se articularon de manera virtuosa con los significados de la nación.
