description This article offers some of the results of an empirical research developed at University of La Laguna (Spain), the main idea was to understand both students and teachers real usage of ICT and to investigate about its influence in their digital teaching and learning processes in higher education. In order to manage this study’s development two independent questionnaires for 1561 students and 206 teachers who participated in the research. In this paper authors present only results mainly related to usage of ITC or digital skills of both teachers and students, in order to describe information about: search methods, communications development (e mail, forum use, instant messaging, social networking), accomplishing specific tasks: (use of different software, use of image edition software, use of video or audio editing software); entertainment activities (downloading music or movies); academy activities (use of collaborative work space, use of online classrooms); web participation activities (personal web page edition, management or use of other web sites and blogging).

En este artículo se ofrecen algunos resultados de un estudio empírico desarrollado en la Universidad de La Laguna (España) con la finalidad de conocer los usos que el alumnado y el profesorado  universitario hace de las TIC e indagar acerca de su influencia en los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje virtual en la educación superior. Para el desarrollo de este estudio se crearon dos cuestionarios independientes en el que participaron un total de 1561 estudiantes  y 206 profesores. En el presente documento se aborda solo una parte de este estudio centrándose específicamente en la dimensión de uso de las TIC o competencia digital de profesores y estudiantes, donde se recoge información sobre actividades de búsqueda de información; desarrollo de procesos comunicacionales (consultar el correo electrónico, participar en foros, mensajería instantánea, usar redes sociales); elaboración de tareas (usar distintos paquetes ofimáticos, manejar programas de retoque de imágenes, utilizar programas de manipulación de audio y vídeo); actividades de ocio (descargar música y películas); actividades formativas (utilizar espacios de trabajo colaborativo, acceder a las aulas virtuales); actividades de participación en la web (editar páginas web personal, gestionar y dinamizar otras páginas web, escribir en blogs).
