Summary:	This paper analyzes the background associated with poverty and make synthesis of the main elements of the phenomenon that allow addressing its study. To accomplish this, the start of the poverty in the world is located temporarily, which leads, on the one hand, to distinguish between poverty and inequality and, on the other, to observe how has been tried to approach the analysis of the phenomenon of poverty, that still remains valid, since 40 % of the world population suffers it.
