description | The active, 220 km-long, left-lateral Bucaramanga Fault traverses the metropolitan area of Bucaramanga(Colombia), home to over 1.5 million people. Imaging the shallow geometry of this fault is crucial forunderstanding the recurrence of seismogenic tectonic processes that may have occurred in the recent geological past. Industry seismic sections across this fault do not resolve shallow strata; collection of high- resolution seismic data across the fault zone is of paramount relevance. In this work, a 2D high-resolution shallow seismic experiment (reflection seismic) is underway. An 18 lb sledgehammer is being used as energy source, generating seismic pulses with frequencies between 10 and 200 Hz. Data are being recorded with a 32 channel digital system. This equipment allows acquisition of both seismic data at sampling rates up to 0.25 milliseconds. Data was processed using hardware and software available at the INSTITUTO COLOMBIANO DEL PETROLEO of ECOPETROL. This project uses concepts and technology from oil industry and applying them to socially significant geological problems. |

La falla activa sinextral de Bucaramanga atraviesa el Área Metropolitana de Bucaramanga (Colombia), lugar de cerca de 1,2 millones de habitantes. La imagen de la geometría somera de esta falla es crucial para entender la recurrencia de procesos tectónicos sismogénicos que pueden haber ocurrido en el pasado geológico reciente. Las secciones sísmicas de la industria que cruzan esta falla no resuelven el estrato somero. Por tal motivo, la recolección de datos sísmicos de alta resolución de la zona de falla, es un parámetro relevante. En este trabajo, un experimento sísmico somero de alta resolución 2D (Sísmica de reflexión) es el procedimiento. Una porra de 18 libras es la fuente de energía usada, generando pulsos sísmicos con frecuencias entre 10 y 200 Hz. Los datos son grabados con un sistema digital de 32 canales. Este equipo usado, permitió adquirir datos sísmicos y tasas de muestreo de 0.25 milisegundos. Los datos fueron procesados usando hardware y software disponible en el INSTITUTO COLOMBIANO DEL petróleo de ecopetrol. Este proyecto utiliza los conceptos y tecnologías de la industria del petróleo para solucionar problemas geológicos socialmente significativos.
