description A “socially live” issue related to Geology is dealt with: the controversy surrounding the succession of earthquakes in the Ebro Delta (Spain). This article examines both students’ ideas about earthquakes and the practice of using evidence in the context of choosing a causal explanation of Delta’s earthquakes. The study is part of the researches on reasoning about socioscientific issues in Geology. Three groups are involved: one belonging to CSE 4th grade (students aged from 16 to 17) and two to baccalaureate 1st grade (aged from 17 to 18). The results indicate that most of students understand an earthquake as a common phenomenon, and relate it exclusively to the tectonics plates. Regarding the controversy of Ebro Delta most choose as the cause of earthquakes the combination of natural causes and human activity, and focus on building an explanation, rather than justify their choice based on evidence.

Se aborda una cuestión “socialmente viva” relacionada con la geología: la polémica en torno a la sucesión de terremotos en el Delta del Ebro (España). El artículo examina por un lado, las ideas del alumnado acerca de los terremotos y, por otro, la práctica de uso de pruebas en el contexto de elección de una explicación causal acerca de los terremotos del Delta. El estudio forma parte de las investigaciones de argumentación sobre temas socio-científicos en geología. Participan tres aulas, una de 4.º de ESO (de 16 a 17 años) y dos de 1.º de bachillerato (de 17 a 18 años). Los resultados indican que la mayoría del alumnado entiende que los terremotos en general son fenómenos frecuentes y los relacionan exclusivamente con las placas tectónicas. Respecto a la polémica del Delta del Ebro la mayoría elige como causa de los terremotos la combinación de causas naturales y la actividad humana, y se centra en construir una explicación, más que en justificar su elección con base en pruebas.  On traite une question “socialement vivante” en rapport avec la géologie: la polémique concernant la série de séismes survenus dans le Delta de l’Ebro (Espagne). L’article examine, d’une part, les idées des étudiants au sujet des séismes et, d’autre part, les pratiques en matière d’utilisation de preuves dans le cadre du choix d’une explication justifiant les de tremblements de terre dans le Delta. L’étude fait partie des recherches d’argumentation au sujet de thèmes socio-scientifiques de géologie. Trois classes y participent, une classe de 4ème ESO (Éducation Secondaire Obligatoire – de 16 à 17 ans) et deux classes de 1ère année du Baccalauréat (17-18 ans). Les résultats indiquent que la majorité des élèves comprend que les séismes en général son des phénomènes fréquents et ils les associent exclusivement avec les plaques tectoniques. Concernant la polémique du Delta de l’Ebro la majorité a choisi, comme cause des séismes, une combinaison des causes naturelles et de l’activité humaine, et se centre sur la construction d’une explication plutôt que sur la justification du choix basé sur des preuves. Aborda-se uma questão “socialmente viva” relacionada com a geologia: a polêmica em volta à sucessão de tremores no Delta do Ebro (Espanha). O artigo examina as ideias dos alunos acerca dos tremores e a prática do uso de provas em volta da eleição de uma explicação causal acerca dos tremores do Delta. O estudo faz parte das pesquisas de argumentação sobre temas sóciocientíficos em geologia. Participam alunos de três salas de aula de 4° de ESO (de 16 a 17 anos) e dois de 1° colegiado (17 – 18 anos). Os resultados indicam que a maioria dos alunos entende que os tremores em geral são fenômenos frequentes e os relacionam exclusivamente com as placas tectônicas. Diante a polêmica do Delta do Ebro a maioria elege como causa dos tremores a combinação de causas naturais e a atividade humana, e se centra em construir uma explicação, mais do que em justificar sua eleição com base em provas.
