In these pages we present some of theprincipal normative frameworks that legislated national electoral processes throughout the XIX c. in Mexico, allowing a close examination of certain suffrage practices as a wayto understand the values and meanings that the population conferred to the elections. |

En este artículo reflexionamos sobre el sentido e importancia de las prácticas electorales decimonónicas en México. Especialmente nos interesa ofrecer una idea general de cómo se fue construyendo la institución electoral y conformando una cultura política en torno al sufragio durante el periodo. La elección, en tanto mecanismo vinculado a la soberanía del pueblo y a la representación política, constituyó la fuente de legitimidad de todo régimen republicano, pero fue también un espacio de negociación política fundamental para la edificación de los poderes públicos y la gobernabilidad del nuevo país. En estas páginas presentamos algunos de los rasgos principales de los marcos normativos que rigieron los procesos electorales de carácter nacional a lo largo del siglo XIX en México, para acercarnos luego a algunas prácticas del sufragio como el camino para entender valores y significados conferidos por la población a los comicios. Notre but est de réléchir à propos du sens et de l’importance des pratiques électorales dans le Mexique du XIXe siècle. Ce qui nous intéresse particulièrement c’est d’offrir une idée générale tant sur la façon dont s’est construite l’institution électorale que de la conformation d’une culture politique autour du suffrage pendant la période. Si les élections, en tant que mécanisme lié à la souveraineté du peuple et à la représentation politique, constituent la source de légitimité de tout régime républicain, elles ont été également un espace de négociation politique fondamental pour bâtir les pouvoirs publics et la gouvernabilité du nouveau pays. Dans les pages qui suivent nous présentons les principaux traits des cadres normatifs régissant les processus électoraux sur le plan national tout au long du XIXe siècle, ain d’étudier ensuite quelques pratiques du suffrage comme moyen permettant de comprendre les valeurs et la signiication que la population octroyait aux élections.
