Pese a que su destacable explotación de petróleo le ha permitido recibir significativos ingresos a título de regalías, la estructura socioeconómica alcanzada en el departamento de Casanare no ha sido la esperada. Por ello, la finalidad de este documento consiste en demostrar que la gestión y administración aplicada sobre estos recursos (representada por el índice de calidad institucional) no fue consecuente con los efectos socioeconómicos alcanzados en el departamento revisado, durante el periodo 2004-2015. Esta demostración, que dio lugar, al mismo tiempo, a una relación con la denominada maldición de recursos naturales para dicha región, se definió una vez analizados los resultados obtenidos con las regresiones lineales estimadas a través del método de mínimos cuadrados ordinarios, y sus comparaciones, con los resultados de los otros departamentos sobresalientes en producción petrolera, bajo los criterios del método de semejanza y diferencia de Ragin.
