Desde los años noventa, Casanare ha sufrido una transformación económica y social que obedece a la incursión de la industria petrolera, este fenómeno fortaleció las estructuras paramilitares que llevaron a cabo graves vulneraciones a los derechos humanos como consecuencia de una política neoliberal de seguridad privada a favor de los intereses económicos de las empresas multinacionales, lo que generó miles de víctimas de desplazamiento, desaparición forzada entre otros crímenes de lesa humanidad.
