Knowing the truth implies establishing the identity of authors and causes, facts and circumstances related to violations, in turn, it allows the approach to a reality as a right to remember.Thus, the truth is not reduced to the individual right of any direct victim or his relatives to know what happened, but it is a right that reaches society based on the knowledge of its history and that includes “the duty to remember” or “duty of memory”. The State must take measures guaranteeing non-repetition,preventing violations from reproducing, since for a people, knowledge of the history of their oppression belongs to their heritage and as such must be preserved.

La memoria histórica es un importante derecho de los estudiantes del preuniversitario a explorar la verdad en torno a acontecimientos de violación de derechos humanos. Conocer la verdad implica establecer la identidad de autores y causas, hechos y circunstancias relacionadas con violaciones; a su vez, permite el acercamiento a una realidad como derecho al recuerdo. Así, la verdad no se reduce al derecho individual de toda víctima directa o de sus familiares a saber lo que ocurrió, sino que es un derecho que alcanza la sociedad en función del conocimiento de su historia y que comprende “el deber de recordar” o “deber de memoria”. El Estado deberá tomar medidas que garanticen la no repetición, que eviten que las violaciones se reproduzcan, pues para un pueblo, el conocimiento de la historia de su opresión pertenece a su patrimonio y como tal debe ser preservado.
