This new form of Liberalism was less capable of producing the social reforms that the old Liberals had promised. Today, and after the historical development that the internal armed conflict in Colombia has followed, it is impossible to think that a return to the reformist Liberal path of the old times would be sufficient to provide a solution to the crisis in Colombia. Colombian Liberalism was simply not able to provide an organic and material base that would guide publicpolicies towards a fair distribution of wealth. And so, as this paper attempts to demonstrate that the Colombian war is a catastrophe that has its foundations in the failure of Colombian Liberalism. |

El presente estudio versa sobre el liberalismo en Colombia. Adoptacomo criterio de fondo que el liberalismo no puso en práctica las reformas sociales que propuso adelantar desde la década del treinta del siglo pasado, en especial la reforma social agraria –que luego intentó en los sesenta– sin avanzar en ese propósito –lo que dio pábulo a la insurgencia–; en los noventa maduró hacia el neoliberalismo, y a estas alturas del desenvolvimiento histórico del conflicto interno armado no es dable aceptar que si retornase a la senda liberal reformista pudiera dar una salida a la crisis colombiana. El liberalismo colombiano no logró dar base orgánica y material a políticas públicas orientadas a la distribución justa dela riqueza; a pesar de entender quela paz requería reformas sociales, no las pudo hacer. Así, la guerra es una catástrofe que tiene su fundamento en el fracaso del liberalismo como intenta demostrar el artículo.
