description This article proposes a task to help first semester students of technology in topography at Quindío University to build the concept of area. The didactic design was based on the content analysis of area concept at university level, taking into account the following curriculum organizers: conceptual structure, representation systems and phenomenology. A diagnostic task was analyzed in which the students had to realize the design of the figure to locate a garden into a mall. The area of the task is not expressed by a numerical value or units of measurement. The aim is to establish a comparison between two squared areas by means of the ratio between them. The results show that a meaningful task was designed for students since it is a problem solving of the concept of area in the topographical context. The students must apply their previous knowledge to solve this challenging task because of the lack of measurements in the graphical representation which forces them to develop a more complex abstract level than to apply a simple algorithm.

En este artículo se propone una tarea que ayude en la construcción del concepto de área, en estudiantes de primer semestre de tecnología en topografía de la Universidad del Quindío. El diseño didáctico se realizó con base en el análisis de contenido del concepto de área a nivel universitario, tomando en cuenta los siguientes organizadores del currículo: La estructura conceptual, los sistemas de representación y la fenomenología. Se analizó una tarea de diagnóstico en la cual los estudiantes deben realizar el diseño de la figura para ubicar un jardín en un centro comercial. El área en la solución de la tarea no se expresa mediante un valor numérico ni con unidades de medida; el propósito es establecer una comparación del área de dos superficies cuadradas por medio de la razón entre ellas. Los resultados indican que se diseñó una tarea significativa para los estudiantes, ya que es una situación problema del concepto de área en el contexto topográfico. Los estudiantes deben emplear los conocimientos previos y la tarea representa un desafío al resolverla, ya que la falta de medidas en la representación gráfica obligan al estudiante a desarrollar un nivel de abstracción más complejo que la simple aplicación de un algoritmo.
