During the experience of the Granadina Confederacy and that of the United States of Colombia, from 1857 to 1885, the permanent army was reduced to militias. This paper shows the organization and composition of the armed forces in the Sovereign State of Magdalena during the federal period, aimed to reconstruct the conformation, the establishment and the operation of the military institution in the circumstances of the federation, paying special attention to the way in which both said militias and the army constituted a political force in that region. |

El proceso de formación del Estado moderno incluye al monopolio de la fuerza armada como uno de los principales elementos que lo consolidan. En el caso colombiano, el control de la fuerza armada ha enfrentado grandes dificultades originadas en distintas posiciones políticas que marcaron la historia nacional. Durante la experiencia del régimen de la Confederación Granadina y de los Estados Unidos de Colombia, entre 1857 y 1885, el ejército permanente fue reducido a la Guardia Nacional y en cada uno de los estados soberanos reducido a milicias. Este artículo estudia la organización y composición de las fuerzas armadas en el Estado Soberano de Magdalena durante el período federal, dirigido a reconstruir la conformación, el establecimiento y la operación de la institución militar en las circunstancias de la federación, prestando especial atención a la forma en que tanto las milicias como el ejército constituyeron una fuerza política en esa región.
