Portugal and Spain were faithful representatives of this scenario, which shows the close relationship between education and Catholicism. La coeducación de los sexos, largamente discutida desde finales del siglo XIX en los países europeos, ha tenido poca repercusión en Brasil. Bajo la oposición de la Iglesia Católica, la defendieron los protestantes misioneros aportados aquí a partir de 1870. Tras consolidarse en los países católicos, la religión fue determinante para las rutas educacionales, con sólidas bases en los principios de la Iglesia. Portugal y España fueron fieles representantes de ese escenario, donde se observa la estrecha relación entre educación y catolicismo. En cuanto a la coeducación, revestida en algunos segmentos por los principios libertarios, fue limitada por el conservadorismo en vigor hasta el siglo XX. A coeducação dos sexos, largamente discutida desde finais do século XIX nos países europeus, pouca repercussão teve no Brasil. Tendo a oposição da Igreja Católica, foi defendida pelos protestantes missionários que aqui aportaram a partir de 1870. Consolidada nos países católicos, a religião foi determinante nos rumos educacionais, solidamente alicerçada nos princípios da Igreja. Portugal e Espanha foram fiéis representantes desse quadro, onde se observa a estreita ligação com educação e catolicismo. Quanto à coeducação, revestida em alguns segmentos pelos princípios libertários, foi cerceada pelo conservadorismo vigente até o século XX.
