description | Dimension stone present deterioration process caused by air pollution and some industrial subtances used for application and maintenance. Loss of brilliance, alterations of original color, changes in the porosity and absortion of original color, changes in the ornamental rocks. The alterability tests amd technological characterization, carried out on base of a systematic sampling in the exploration and mining activities, permit the anticipate knowledge of the rock behaviors against environmental conditions, predicting problems that may affect the potential use and trade possibilities of some types of rocks such dimension stones. Six types of Brazilian granites were submitted to different test suchstatic lixiviation, exposition to sulphurous acid and salt crystallization to simulate the main chemical an physical agents of deteroration in rocks applied in external and internal revetment. The degree of microfacturing and the mineralogical constitution are the most important factors of the alterability. A control of porosity and water absorption parameters showed some differences between the different types of granites tested, establishing differences related to the susceptibility to weathering process. |

Las rocas ornamentales experimentan procesos de deterioro ocasionados por la contaminación atmosférica y por la acción de algunas sustancias industriales usadas para su instalación, limpieza y conservación, presentando problemas como pérdida de brillo y color, cambios en su porosidad y absorción y reducción de su resistencia mecánica. Los ensayos de alteración acelerada y de caracterización tecnológica, realizados a partir de muestreo sistemático tanto en los trabajos de exploración como en procesos de desarrollo de mina y fabricación de productos, permiten conocer anticipadamente las características de las rocas en relación con la acción del medio ambiente, ayudando a prever la existencia de problemas que pueden afectar el uso de determinada litología como roca ornamental y por consiguiente sus posibilidades de comercialización. Seis variedades de granitos ornamentales brasileños, fueron sometidas a ensayos de ataque químico, lixiviación estática, exposición a vapores de ácido sulfuroso y cristalización de sales para simular algunos agentes físicos y químicos que causan deterioro en rocas aplicadas en revestimientos internos y externos. El grado de microfracturación y la constitución mineralógica fueron considerados como los factores determinantes de la alterabilidad. Variación en factores como porosidad y absorción de agua después de los ensayos de alteración acelerada, permitieron determinar los materiales más susceptibles a procesos de alteración.
