Summary: | The area of study is located near Rio de Janeiro city at Niterói, a region mainly composed by precambric rocks (560 M.a.). The geomorphologic evolution of this area is characterized by the existence of at least two main tectonic events, which has been studied from morphometric and fracture analysis. The data indicate the existence of an initially normal left-lateral stress regime during Lower Cretaceous, followed by a left-lateralstress regime during Paleogene. Finally it is inferred the existence of a younger rigth-lateral stress regime that might correspond to a pleistocene tectonc event reported in ohter areas. It is suggested that this methodology can also be applied to similar areas in Colombia, specifically whwrw there are outcrops of igneous or metamorphic basement.
