Desde 1988, Ingeominas emplea la tecnología GPS como un componente en el estudio de fenómenos geodinámicos. La experiencia ganada durante varios años de trabajos de campo en la toma de información, procesamiento e interpretación de datos GPS da lugar a que se realice un esfuerzo adicional para implementar una Red Nacional de Estaciones Permanentes GPS, que contribuirá al entendimiento de los fenómenos geodinámicos, en especial de aquellos asociados a deformación sísmica y volcánica. Este documento presenta aspectos generales y el panorama actual y futuro del uso de la tecnología GPS con este propósito, tecnología que ha sido y es empleada con éxito en varios países en el desarrollo de programas de investigación orientados a la prevención de desastres.
