description The history and evolution of the rural school in Cuba in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is presented as a case study. The main methods of this research work are document review and key informant interviews. The results include and present a periodization ‘map’, consisting of three stages from 1816 until 1999. The study aims to add to the efforts already undertaken in the country in order to establish the Model of Primary School taking into consideration the peculiarities that rural areas contribute. The article does not attempt to provide complete answers but seeks instead to start an academic dialogue towards an interesting and comprehensive contemporary panorama.

Resumen           Desde la perspectiva de la indagación histórica se muestra como caso de estudio, la historia y evolución de la escuela rural en Cuba en los siglos XIX y XX, apoyado en la revisión documental y la entrevista a informantes claves como métodos principales. Entre los resultados que se ofrecen, está la fundamentación de una periodización contentiva de tres etapas a partir de 1816, y se extiende hasta 1999. El estudio pretende sumarse a los esfuerzos ya iniciados en el país por fundamentar el Modelo de Escuela Primaria con sus particularidades en el área rural. El artículo no intenta estructurar respuestas acabadas, sino iniciar un diálogo académico en una dirección que ofrece en los momentos actuales un panorama interesante y abarcador.   Palabras clave: Revista Historia de la Educación Latinoamericana, escuela, multigrado, educación rural, periodización, evolución histórica.   A partir da perspectiva da indagação histórica, apresentamos, como estudo de caso, a história e evolução da escola rural em Cuba nos séculos XIX e XX, tendo como métodos principais a revisão documental e entrevistas com informantes-chave. Dentre os resultados está a fundamentação de uma periodização constituída de três etapas entre 1816 e 1999. Esse estudo pretende juntar-se aos esforços iniciados neste país, de fundamentar o Modelo de Escola Primária com suas particularidades na área rural. O artigo não pretende apresentar respostas acabadas, mas iniciar um diálogo académico na direção de um panorama interesante e abrangente em nossos días.
