| description | This article analyses the practice of the death sentence in Colombia as punishment semiology and the punitive theater from the end of the colonial system to the beginning of the 20th century. In the same way, it examines the penal judicial ordination changes, which made possible the use of the gallows in Colombia as a social control instrument. Also analyzed is the temporary abolition of the gallows in the Radical system period, its resurgence during the Regeneration system and its political use as an instrument to eliminate their enemies in dificult situations like the Thousand Days War. The article emphasizes the use of the gallows on the State’s behalf as an instrument of a symbolic dissuasion between the population, and the opposition of a real horror pedagogy, in an essential period for the State and Nation development history in the 19th century, to its ultimate elimination in the constitutional reform in 1910. |

Este artículo analiza la práctica de la pena de muerte en Colombia como semiología del castigo y del teatro punitivo desde finales del régimen colonial hasta principios del siglo XX. Igualmente examina las transformaciones del ordenamiento jurídico penal que posibilitaron la práctica patibularia en Colombia y su implementación como instrumento de control social. Se analiza su abolición temporal en el periodo del régimen Radical y su resurgimiento durante el régimen de la Regeneración, y su utilización política como instrumento de eliminación del enemigo en conflictos como la Guerra de los Mil Días. Se resalta el manejo de la práctica patibularia por parte del Estado como un instrumento de disuasión simbólica de la población y de la oposición en una verdadera pedagogía del terror en un periodo fundamental en la historia de la formación del Estado y de la Nación en el siglo XIX y hasta su eliminación definitiva en la reforma constitucional de 1910.
